How to get unidex running, answers to common questions, and what to try when something isn't working. Press / to search the whole site.

Getting started

You'll need the board (or a ready-made unidex), a USB-C data cable, a computer with Chrome or Edge, and a micro SD card (FAT32).

  1. Install. On the Install page, plug it in, press one of its buttons so it's awake, and click Install. The first time it starts, it shows the buttons and a QR code for this site.
  2. Set up the SD card. Copy the starter files (a few badges and an empty timetable) to the card, and put it in the slot.
  3. Add your timetable. Send your calendar from Tools, or edit timetable.csv on the card.
  4. Voice notes, if you want them. Add your WiFi and keys on Setup.
  5. Add apps. Browse the Apps page and install what you like.

Questions

How long does the battery last, and what does "Charge me" mean?

It depends on how much you use it. It sleeps whenever you aren't pressing a button, and WiFi is only on while Notes is sending, during a Dex scan, or while it syncs the time.

  • When it's low, things that need a lot of power wait and say "Battery too low".
  • When it's flat, it shows "Charge me" and switches off. Plug it in, then press PWR.
What goes on the SD card?

Your badges, timetable, notes, the Dex and your apps. The card has to be formatted as FAT32, and unidex never formats it for you.

If the device says "No SD card", either the card isn't FAT32 or it isn't pushed all the way in.

Will updating lose my files or settings?

No. Update on the Install page and Sync everything on Tools both keep your settings, keys, Pet and files.

Only Install erases the device's settings, and even that never touches the files on the SD card.

Are apps from the store safe?

Every app is tried automatically and read by a person before it's listed. On the device, each app is also kept apart from everything else:

  • It has its own memory, its own folder and a time limit.
  • It can't reach your WiFi password, keys, notes or other apps.
  • If it uses the internet, the store tells you before you install it.
What does "App error" mean?

The app hit a bug or one of its limits, and the message says where. The rest of the device keeps working.

You can tell the app's author (each app's page has a link), or remove the app with hold B in Apps.

What does unidex send, and where?
  • There's no account, no analytics and no tracking.
  • This site only talks to your device, over USB.
  • Your notes go to the services you set up: OpenAI or Anthropic, and GitHub if you turn it on.

The details are in PRIVACY.md.

I'm passing it on. How do I wipe it?

Settings > Reset data > Factory reset (it asks twice) wipes the WiFi, keys, Pet, friends and settings. Format the SD card on a computer as well.

Troubleshooting

The website can't find my unidex
  1. It's probably asleep. Press one of its buttons and try again.
  2. Check the cable. Some USB-C cables only charge, and you need one that carries data.
  3. If the board is brand new, or has other software on it, unplug it. Hold BOOT while you plug it back in, let go, and try again.
"Another page or program is using the unidex"

Only one page can talk to it at a time. Close other tabs of this site (or the Mac calendar helper), then try again.

It froze

It restarts by itself after 30 seconds. Or hold A + B for a second to restart it now.

"Time not set"

Set it in Settings, or use Set the clock or Sync everything on the Tools page.

A note didn't send

Notes wait on the card and send later. On Setup, use the Test buttons to check the WiFi and each key.

"2 synced, 1 stuck" means one note was refused and the others went through.

Still stuck?

Open an issue and say what happened, with your firmware version (Settings > Battery & info). Problems with an app from the store go to the apps repository instead.
